The History of The Heart Chakra

by Justine Lucas

I was first introduced to the chakras by my Grandmother Judith when I was a little kid. She’s been an energy healer ever since I can remember. She would tell me about the magic of these ancient energy centers that run throughout your body, known as chakras. I began studying the chakras more seriously in high school and have used this system throughout my whole career as a singer-songwriter and stage performer ~ pulling from the emotions and energy types within the chakras to fully express myself creatively through music.
This is the basis of my teaching method. Music isn’t just technical, it’s also physical, emotional, and spiritual. Music is a flow of energy: vibrations and frequencies.
Understanding the Chakras:
Chakras are often described as spinning wheels of energy, located along the central channel of the body. The word chakra literally means “wheel” or “circle” in Sanskrit. Chakras play a significant role in influencing our physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being. There are seven main chakras within the body and five chakras outside of the body, each with its unique qualities and characteristics.
The heart chakra, known as "Anahata" in Sanskrit, originates from ancient Indian spiritual traditions, particularly within the practice of yoga and the system of Ayurveda. It is one of the seven primary chakras in the human body, and its concept is deeply embedded in Hinduism and Buddhism, both of which trace their roots to India and Nepal.
The idea of chakras can be found in texts dating back to around 1,000 BCE, specifically in the Upanishads, ancient Hindu scriptures that explore metaphysical concepts. The heart chakra itself is associated with compassion, love, and emotional balance, and is believed to be located in the center of the chest, near the physical heart. As part of a larger spiritual framework, the chakra system spread through various Indian philosophies and eventually to the West, particularly during the 20th century, as interest in Eastern spirituality grew.
Singing from the Heart Chakra - Connecting and Healing:
The Heart Chakra, situated at the center of the chest, governs love, compassion, and empathy. Singing from this chakra fosters a genuine connection with your audience and your own inner landscape, as you learn to express musically from a place of love and emotional depth. By tapping into the Heart Chakra, your voice becomes a conduit for compassion, touching the hearts of those who listen and offering comfort and solace in the loving vibrational power of your song.
Singing from your chakras is a powerful and transformative practice that enhances both your voice and spirit. By aligning and channeling the energy of each chakra, you create a harmonious connection between your physical and spiritual self, unlocking the true potential of your voice and embracing your authentic expression. As you embark on this journey of self-discovery through singing, you'll find your voice becoming more resonant, expressive, and soulful. This practice also leads to a deeper sense of inner peace, fulfillment, and spiritual growth.

If anything is worth doing, do it with all your heart"  ~ Buddha.
